Survey of Levels of Phthalate Ester Plasticizers in a Sewage
The sewage lagoon and the receiving stream were grossly polluted as several phthalate ester plasticizers: DMP, DEP, DPhP, DBP, DEHP, DOP and DINP were found present at monthly mean levels of between 24.02 mg/L and 139.25 mg/L in the sewage treatment lagoon and 10.41 mg/L and 80.53 mg/L in the receiving stream.

Phthalates in the environment: characteristics, fate and
Phthalates are well-known emerging contaminants that harm human health and the environment. Therefore, this review aims to discuss about the occurrence, fate, and phthalates concentration in the various environmental matrices (e.g., aquatic, sediment, soil, and sewage sludge). Hence, it is necessary
- How many phthalate esters are there in urban WWTPs?
- In this study, 14 phthalate esters (PAEs) were selected to study their occurrence, distribution, removal and ecological risk in urban WWTPs.
- What are phthalate esters used for?
- 1. Introduction Phthalate esters (PAEs) have been used in a wide variety of everyday products such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, food packaging materials, paints, detergents, medical devices and personal care products, etc. for more than 80 years to improve the processability, ductility and flexibility of materials , , .
- What is the concentration of benzylbutyl phthalate in WWTP wastewater?
- Benzylbutyl phthalate and diisobutyl phthalate were the major compounds in the influent and effluent, respectively, with average concentrations of 32.97 and 18.07 μg/L. However, there was no significant spatial difference in the concentration of PAEs in WWTPs wastewater in different regions of Shaanxi Province.
- Which phthalate is considered a PAE?
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed six PAEs, including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), dioctyl phthalate (DNOP), and di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), as priority toxic pollutants for control in 1977 .
- What are ecological risks of residual Paes in effluent from 51 WWTPs?
- Fig. 5. Ecological risks of residual PAEs in effluent from 51 WWTPs in Shaanxi Province. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that almost all effluent discharged from urban WWTPs in Shaanxi Province has medium to high ecological risk.
- Should we control the use and emissions of plasticizers?
- Except for the DIBP and EPA-listed priority pollutants, the annual mass load of the other seven PAEs was 0.26 tons, or only 0.81 %. The results of this survey suggest that we should strictly control the use and emissions of DIBP and EPA-listed priority pollutants, providing direction for the future use of plasticizers. Fig. 6.
