Innovative processes allow cyclical tyre production and reuse
Such products include new tyres, but also high-end industrial components such as engine mounts and vibration isolators. The REW-TYRES team also demonstrated the processes’ suitability for making consumer products such as shoes and shoe soles, watch bands and numerous others. The project has patented both processes and its technology.
Production process / Nokian Tyres
Production process. The main raw materials of a tyre are natural rubber, synthetic rubber, carbon black and oil. The share of rubber compounds in the total weight of a tyre is more than 80%. The rest consists of various kinds of reinforcing materials.
Standardization of secondary raw materials from end of life tyres
Nearly 3 million t of used tyres arise annually in the UE27, but only one third of them return to market as secondary raw material. During the decade 2000 to 2010 rubber scraps and granulates exported outside EU has passed from 25.000 t to near 200.000 t and probably the tendency today is even to a higher increase of this movement.
Plasticizer
A plasticizer ( UK: plasticiser) is a substance that is added to a material to make it softer and more flexible, to increase its plasticity, to decrease its viscosity, and/or to decrease friction during its handling in manufacture. Plasticizers are commonly added to polymers such as plastics and rubber, either to facilitate the handling of the

- What type of rubber is used in the tire industry?
- It is used in many parts of the tire, mainly used for truck and earthmover tire tread 60% of rubber used in the tire industry is synthetic rubber, produced from petroleum-derived hydrocarbons, although natural rubber is still necessary for the remaining 40%.
- Can vulcanized rubber be used for solid tire manufacturing?
- The primary material in this study was NR. However, Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) were added to the formulation to enhance the mechanical properties of the vulcanized rubber for solid tire manufacturing, including abrasion resistance, ozone resistance, and oil resistance.
- Do fillers and plasticizers influence the distribution of materials in rubber?
- These findings emphasize the importance of the influence of the use of fillers and plasticizers on the distribution of materials in the rubber matrix . Changes in the viscosity of rubber compounds, influenced by varying SBE ratios (Table 2), impact the distribution of additives and fillers within the rubber blend.
- How radial tires are reinforced?
- Since then, steel has been adopted in the reinforcement of belts for radial tires. Metal reinforcements give the tire resistance and rigidity. Textile has always been used to strengthen tires. In 2001, thanks among other things to an innovation in this field, Michelin tires enabled Concorde to take to the air once again.
- Do you need a plasticizer when incorporating a filler into a rubber matrix?
- The addition of filler, according to Nasruddin and Susanto for even distribution, it is necessary to add plasticizers when incorporating fillers into the rubber matrix. Plasticizer has a crucial role in the manufacture of rubber compounds, serving to soften the rubber matrix [23, 24].
- What is the tear strength of rubber vulcanizate?
- The tear strength of rubber vulcanizate describes the amount of force required to tear the test object. Tear strength is determined by material specifications, the ratio of materials used, intermolecular bond strength, adhesion, and cohesion forces.
