BASF begins production of Palatinol DOTP plasticizer at its
HOUSTON, TEXAS, July 18, 2017 – BASF started the production of Palatinol DOTP (dioctyl terephthalate), a general purpose plasticizer, at its Pasadena, Texas facility, with a nameplate capacity of 60,000 metric tons per year. The plant enables BASF to respond to the growing demand for non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers in North America, and strengthens its position as a reliable source for DOTP.

DOTP is a phthalate-free plasticizer used in cables, flooring and roof coatings and other materials for the construction industry. PTA is used to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a basic packaging material for mineral water, dairy products, juices and sunflower oil. It is also used in a reaction with 2-EH to produce DOTP.

The project is a conversion of 2-propylheptanol (2-PH) production at the site to 2-EH production. BASF said on Tuesday that the 2-EH plant secures consistent raw material integration for its DOTP. Supply and demand for plasticizers in the US market has been steadier this week due to lessening effects of European force majeure (s).
Sibur's 100,000 mt/year DOTP plant in Perm starts production
