Phthalates Factsheet | National Biomonitoring Program | CDC
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more durable. They are often called plasticizers. Some phthalates are used to help dissolve other materials. Phthalates are in hundreds of products, such as vinyl flooring, lubricating oils, and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, hair sprays).
The Latest Supply Chain Disruption: Plastics
Texas is home to the world’s largest petrochemical complex, which turns oil and gas and other byproducts into plastics. Almost 100 critical chemicals and derivatives used widely across many...
Surveillance of plasticizers, bisphenol A, steroids and
Surveillance of plasticizers, bisphenol A, steroids and caffeine in surface water of River Ganga and Sundarban wetland along the Bay of Bengal: occurrence, sources, estrogenicity screening and ecotoxicological risk assessment - ScienceDirect Water Research Volume 190, 15 February 2025, 116668
Surveillance of plasticizers, bisphenol A, steroids and
Such plasticizers have been observed in the industrial corridor of Ganga (Chakraborty et al., 2025a). Globally, an increasing demand has been observed in the use of such synthetic plasticizers by the plastic manufacturing industry and is expected to reach approximately 9.75 million tons (MT) in 2024 (Wei et al., 2025).

- Why is the plasticizers industry fragmented?
 - The polymers and in turn the plasticizers industry is highly fragmented. The nature of the polymer industry is such that it comprises a diverse range of specifications and end-user markets, leading to market fragmentation. It is even more complex in the recycled plastics industry.
 - How many plastic additives are there in PVC plastics in China?
 - This study documents the material metabolism of 34 plastic additives in PVC plastics in China during 2020 and evaluates the trends when both environmental and economic benefits from these additives are optimized.
 - Do optimized PVC plastic additives reduce toxicity in socio-economic systems?
 - The optimized usage of PVC plastic additives was further simulated for their material metabolism. The results show that the potential toxicity of optimized PVC plastic additives retained in socio-economic systems decreased by 27.9 % compared to pre-optimization results (Figure S10a).
 - Are PVC plastics a consumer of plastic additives?
 - In comparison to other plastics, PVC plastics are the primary consumers of plastic additives (Juanlin, 2012; Liuchen, 2010; Report, 2023; Wenguang, 2008), accounting for over 80 % of plasticizers and heat stabilisers (Alaee et al., 2003). Consequently, PVC plastics and their associated additives were selected as the central focus of this research.
 - Do China's online food delivery services consume plastic?
 - China’s online food delivery (OFD) services consume enormous amounts of disposable plastics. Here, we investigated and modeled the national mass inventories and environmental release of plastics and chemical additives in the plastic. The extra-tree regression identified six key descriptors in determining OFD sales in Chinese cities.
 - What are plasticizers used for?
 - In the plastics industry, plasticizers are among the most frequently utilized additives. The most common polymer to employ plasticizers is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which is the third largest by volume after Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE).
