DINP is one of the phthalates most frequently used in plastic products. DINP is used in various types of plastic consumer products, including: Some polyvinyl chloride (PVC, vinyl) flooring, materials used in automobile interiors, wire and cable insulation, gloves, tubing, garden hoses, and shoes.

- DINP is produced by the esterification of phthalic anhydride with isononanol. Commercially, DINP is not a single compound but rather a complex mixture of phthalate esters having branched alkyl chains with an average chain length of nine. - To identify formulated products containing DINP, EPA searched for safety data sheets (SDS) using internet searches, EPA Chemical and Product Categories (CPCat) (U.S. EPA, 2014) data, and other resources in which SDSs could be found. SDSs were cross-checked with company websites to make sure that each product SDS was current.
