  • How is DINP produced?
  • DINP is produced by the esterification of phthalic anhydride with isononanol. Commercially, DINP is not a single compound but rather a complex mixture of phthalate esters having branched alkyl chains with an average chain length of nine. The following sections present the general physical and chemical properties of DINP.
  • How does EPA identify formulated products containing DINP?
  • To identify formulated products containing DINP, EPA searched for safety data sheets (SDS) using internet searches, EPA Chemical and Product Categories (CPCat) (U.S. EPA, 2014) data, and other resources in which SDSs could be found. SDSs were cross-checked with company websites to make sure that each product SDS was current.
  • Is DINP a hazardous substance?
  • Authorizes EPA to promulgate regulations designating as hazardous substances those substances which, when released into the environment, may present substantial danger to the public health or welfare or the environment. As a phthalate ester, DINP is designated as a hazardous substance under CERCLA.
  • Is DINP a polymer?
  • The 2016 and 2012 CDRs report use of DINP in consumer and commercial plastic and rubber products not covered elsewhere at concentrations by weight of less than 1 percent, at least 30 percent but less than 60 percent, and at least 90 percent. NLM's HSDB identifies the main non-PVC use of DINP as polymer-related.
  • What is the viscosity of DINP at 25 °C?
  • In the final scope document for DINP (U.S. EPA, 2021), a value of 55.334 cP at 25 °C was identified as the viscosity for DINP (De Lorenzi et al., 1998).
  • Is DINP entrained in the products?
  • DINP is likely entrained in the products; however, DINP may be available for exposure depending on the application of the end use products, such as if building and construction materials are cut prior to installation. EPA plans to further investigate processing uses of DINP during risk evaluation.
