US9580571B2 - Aromatic acylation with cyclic anhydride
The aromatic rings of the aromatic compound may also be optionally hydrogenated. Provided is a process for making non-phthalate plasticizers, by acylating an aromatic compound with a succinic anhydride to form a keto-acid, and then esterifying the keto-acid with C 4 -C 13 OXO-alcohols to form a plasticizer compound.
4.10: Alkylation and Acylation of Aromatic Rings - The
The reaction of an aromatic substrate with an acid chloride (or acid anhydride) in the presence of an aluminum chloride catalyst is used to introduce an acyl group (C=O) into the aromatic ring through an electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism. Such reactions are Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions. Friedel-Crafts Alkylation

Aromatic acylation/reduction: an efficient Friedel–Crafts
Friedel–Crafts acylation of aromatic compounds with branched or polyfunctionalised aryl halides followed by reduction of the resulting carbonyl–Lewis acid complex with triethylsilane or polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) polymer gives alkylated aromatic products in high yield.
