Phthalates - ECHA - Europa
Phthalates Phthalates form a family of synthetic chemicals with a wide variety of uses, ranging from consumer to industrial products. There are different kind of phthalates and they are commonly used as softeners to make plastics, such as PVC, more flexible and durable.
Call for evidence on the use of the phthalates DEHP, DBP, BBP
on the placing on the market of articles containing the following four phthalates listed on Annex XIV with a sunset date of 21 February 2015: Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) The . objective. of this call for evidence is to gather concrete
exemption for the use of bis(2 -ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl
applications containing bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). Article 4 of the RoHS Directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Currently, 10 substances are restricted and listed in Annex II
Discussion paper for EFSA 2025 Opinion on phthalates
DBP (0.01), BBP (0.5), DEHP (0.05), and liver effects for DINP and DIDP (0.15 each). Based on a plausible common mode of action (i.e. reduction in fetal testosterone) underlying the reproductive effects of DEHP, DBP and BBP, the Panel considered it appropriate to establish a group-TDI for these phthalates, taking DEHP
EFSA: Updated risk assessment of five phthalates
On December 10, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced the publication of the updated risk assessment completed by the Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) on the five phthalates di-butylphthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), butylbenzylphthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), bis (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP
- Are phthalates banned in Denmark?
- Denmark prepared a report proposing a restriction on the placing on the market and use of certain articles containing four classified phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP). These phthalates are primarily found in PVC as softeners but they can also be found in low concentrations in other plastics and in e.g. dispersions, paints and varnishes.
- Are phthalates CDER regulated?
- Of the phthalates for which significant concern has been expressed because of their reproductive and developmental toxicity, only DBP and DEHP have been used in CDER-regulated drug or biologic products. The recommendations in this guidance apply only to DBP and DEHP. III.
- What is the EPA recommended RfD for phthalate phosphate (DBP)?
- Based on these adverse effects in animals, the EPA-recommended RfD for DEHP is 0.02 mg/kg/day. There are limited data on the health effects of DBP and DEHP in humans. Several studies have sought to quantify human exposure to phthalates using measurements of phthalate ester metabolites in urine.
- Can a threshold be found in a case of phthalate ethylhexyl (DEHP) and di?
- In accordance with the mandate from the Executive Director of ECHA, the rapporteur developed the opinion, summarising the justifications for the feasibility of finding a threshold in the context of applications for authorisation and review reports in the cases of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP).
- Will a phthalate restriction reduce exposure to phthalates?
- According to the report, the proposed restriction will result in a significantly decreased exposure of the public to the four phthalates caused by the use of articles containing these substances. DEHP, DBP and BBP are in the list of substances subject to authorisation (Annex XIV) of the REACH Regulation.
- Are phthalates regulated?
- number of regulatory authorities have begun taking steps to more closely regulate certain phthalates. For example: Congress has prohibited the use of DBP, DEHP, and another phthalate—butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)—in children’s toys at concentrations higher than 0.1 percent (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act 2008).
