The migration of plasticizer in solid propellant grains
Abstract The migration of the plasticizer, dioctyl adipate (DOA) in the accelerated ageing of composite propellant has been studied. The method is based on the extraction of DOA with carbon tetrachloride and its estimation by gas chromatography.
Preliminary results of DOA plasticizer effect on AP/HTPB
The plasticizer is used as an additive to increase the flexibility, softness, and workability of the propellant. This agent is responsible for the reduction in tensile strength and elastic modulus of the material.
Effects of Plasticizers on Solid Rocket Propellant Adhesion
The goal of this research is to characterize the mechanical properties of composite solid rocket propellants as they relate to two plasticizers: Dioctyl Adipate (DOA) and Isodecyl Pelargonate (IDP). Specifically, this project focused on the adhesive bond between a propellant and motor liner.
Dioctyl adipate
Dioctyl adipate ( DOA) is an organic compound with the formula (CH 2 CH 2 CO 2 C 8 H 17) 2. It is a colorless oily liquid. As well as related diesters derived from 2-ethylhexanol, decanol, isodecanol, etc., it is used as a plasticizer. [2] [3] DEHA is sometimes incorrectly called dioctyl adipate. Toxicity [ edit]
Energetics and Compatibility of Plasticizers in Composite
In this paper a comparative analysis on the energetics of ester type plasticizers such as dioctyl adipate (DOA), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dibutyl sebacate (DBS), isodecyl pelargonate...
- Is isodecyl pelargonate a plasticizer for ap/ai/HTPB-based composite solid?
- The Shore A hardness test shows the lowest value was at 3 cm from the insulation layer compared to 25 cm. Besides, it was also found that Isodecyl Pelargonate (IDP) can be a potential plasticizer for AP/AI/HTPB-based composite solid propellant application because it has the lowest viscosity value in the propellant slurry compared to the others.
- What is plasthall DOA?
- Plasthall DOA is chemically the same as MONOPLEX® DOA but with looser specifications on color and acid value. In plastisols, Plasthall DOA offers low initial viscosity and excellent viscosity stability Plasthall DOA is often used to improve the viscosity and viscosity-stability characteristics of phthalate based plastisols.
- What type of plasticizer is used in solid rocket propellant?
- According to Mohd Nurazzi et al. , some plasticizers are classified based on their molecular weight, and the most prevalent plasticizer type used in polymer industries, including solid rocket propellant applications, is the low molecular weight type, which consists of non-volatile, non-reactive esters that are compatible with the binder matrix.
- Do plasticizers migrate during the curing and ageing process?
- An indenter is applied at different regions on the propellant layer to determine the hardness value. This analysis was able to prove that the migration of plasticizers is possible to occur during the curing and ageing process, where the hardness value of the layer is influenced by the concentration of the plasticizer inside it .
- Do plasticizers affect the homogeneity of propellant?
- On top of that, most researchers have proven that the most crucial behaviour of the plasticizers is the particle migration that will affect the homogeneity of the propellant composition. This unwanted phenomenon was proven by the experimental work using chromatographic and Shore A hardness analysis of the propellant layer.
- Does a plasticizer migrate to the insulation layer of a rocket motor?
- However, the migration of the plasticizer to the insulation layer of the rocket motor is the primary concern regarding the plasticizer's behaviour based on simulation and experimental analysis. This phenomenon will have an effect on the grain's mechanical properties.
