Evaluation of some eco‐friendly plasticizers for PLA films
This study was conducted as a first step in order to obtain green materials for food packaging by using an eco-friendly bioplastic, polylactic acid (PLA), and nontoxic plasticizers.
Eco-friendly plasticizers for PLA films - Italian Food Tech
Eco-friendly plasticizers for PLA films E.S. 20 September 2025 0 4648 The polylactic acid (PLA) is an ecological bioplastic that can be used to obtain “green” materials for food packaging. PLA is a thermoplastic polymer with a glass transition temperature of about 60°C.
Evaluation of some eco‐friendly plasticizers for PLA films
Different types of nontoxic biocompatible plasticizers/lubricants, both obtained in the laboratory, as well as commercial ones, were employed to modulate physical and mechanical properties of PLA. Melt compounding by means of a Brabender mixer led to obtaining of homogeneous materials.
Evaluation of some eco‐friendly plasticizers for PLA films
PLA can be efficiently plasticized by EPO and the feasibility of its use as flexible film for food packaging should be considered. 170 PDF Soybean Oil as a Biocompatible Multifunctional Additive for Lubricating Oil G. Karmakar, P. Ghosh Engineering 2015
Developments of biobased plasticizers for compostable
revealed that the PLA food films were more stable compared to those. without ESO plasticizer. 20. ... A review on plasticizers and eco-friendly bio-plasticizers: biomass sources and market.
- How to choose a plasticizer for PLA films?
- The choice of a plasticizer for PLA films is usuallybased on the plasticizer’s compatibility and biodegradability, as well as on the amount of plasticizer necessary for plasticization and on the desired functional properties of the films.
- Can plasticized PLA be used for food packaging applications?
- In conclusion, the study of the influence of five biocompatible non-toxic plasticizers on some properties of plasticized PLA has shown that flexible PLA/USE films and PLA/PEG filmscan be obtained with optical and barrier properties suitable for food packaging applications. - Why is PLA used in film production?
- The brittleness of PLA has presented challenges in film production, prompting researchers to blend it with natural plasticizers such as vegetable oils and citrate to enhance flexibility and processing ease while maintaining biodegradability and safety.
- What are the potential antimicrobial plasticizers based on PLA and ecovio®?
- SOFT-NSAFE and CITREM-LR10 compounds were then employed as potential antioxidant and antimicrobial plasticizers in films based on PLA and Ecovio®. These plasticized films (with a thickness of about 200 μm) were prepared by melt extrusion followed by compression moulding.
- Are bio-based plasticizers for polylactic acid sustainable?
- Research on bio-based plasticizers for polylactic acid (PLA), an environmentally friendly and biodegradable polyester, has advanced due to the increasing focus on sustainable materials.
- What is an example of a plasticizer?
- An example is Ecovio®, a commercially available compound that relies on a blend of PLA and PBAT, specifically designed for packaging applications . The incorporation of plasticizers into PLA is another common practice to improve its inherent limitations .
