  • The effects of different combinations of three superplasticizers (BNS, AS and PC) and two retarders (CA and SG) on the fluidity and compressive strength of SAC cement were studied. Based on the results, the different combinations of superplasticizer and retarder played key roles in the fluidity and the compressive strength.

Moreover, adding 1% of superplasticizer impacted the diffusion of copolymer chain across cement particles significantly.

  • The effect of the use of super plasticizers on the setting of concrete is not found significant except in the case of cements having very low contents of C 3 A. If the C 3 A contents are very low the retardation of setting of cement may be very significant. However the other long term properties are not appreciably affected.

  • The initial fluidity of paste admixed with the superplasticizer of BNS and AS would be decreased by the presence of CA due to the competition effect. In contrary, it was increased by the addition of SG because of the promotion effect. Both CA and SG hardly had any negative effect on the fluidity of cement paste with the superplasticizer of PC.
