  • DEHP, DEHTP, and DiNP predominate in lake and coastal sediments. Contamination patterns of alternative plasticizers depend on the type of industries. Mass inventories of plasticizers in lake sediment were 25 times higher than in a bay. Hydrophobicity was a major factor for mobility of plasticizers in the aquatic environment.

  • Although contamination by plasticizers was relatively low, Lake Sapgyo had the highest replacement ratio (2.3) in sediments, followed by Lakes Hwaseong (1.4), Namyang (1.3), Asan (0.7) and Asan Bay (1.1). Lake Sapgyo is influenced by the manufacturing of LCDs and automobiles, which are major export products in Korea.

  • The profiles of LPs and APs in sediment from the lakes and bay were similar to each other. This suggests that sedimentary plasticizers are transported from the lakes to the bay, based on the dilution effects. Among LPs, DEHP was a predominant compound in all sediment from the lakes and bay due to higher consumption trends and hydrophobicity.

  • Our findings imply that DEHP contamination is much riskier to benthic ecosystems in aquatic environments compared with other LMM phthalates, such as DnBP. The SQGs in our study were proposed because of adverse health effects on benthic organisms dwelling in coastal waters.
