  • Where should the IOP be placed in a conjugated verb in Spanish?
  • In most cases, the Indirect Object Pronoun (IOP) should be placed in front of the conjugated verb in Spanish. However, as we will go through the main rules below, it also depends on how many verbs there are in the sentence and whether or not there is a Direct Object Pronoun (DOP).
  • Can I use a DOP and an IOP in the same sentence?
  • We can use both a DOP and an IOP in the same sentence. Both of the object pronouns are going to be placed in front of the verb, but we need to pay attention to the order; the indirect object is always going to come in front of the direct object. Therefore the sentence order will be as follows: Mi madre regaló juguetes a mí. My mom gave toys to me.
  • Do Spanish IOPS have to agree in gender?
  • In Spanish, none of the Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs) have to agree in gender. For example, you can use the 3rd person singular le regardless of the gender of the person: I asked her where the bathroom is → Le pregunté dónde está el baño I asked him where the bathroom is → Le pregunté dónde está el baño
  • Where should the IOP be placed in a sentence?
  • Both of these possibilities are correct - i.e. you can place the indirect object pronoun in front of the conjugated verb ( voy in this case) or attach it to the infinitive ( hacer in this case), but we recommend that you always place the indirect object pronoun in front of the verb, just to make it easier for yourself to remember.
  • Do IOPS have to agree in gender?
  • In Spanish, when using Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs), you don’t have to worry about the gender of what they are referring to, unlike in English where 3rd pers. sing. indirect object pronouns ('him/her') do agree in gender. None of the Spanish IOPs have to agree in gender.
  • Where should I put the IOP before a conjugated verb?
  • In Spanish, you should place the IOP before the conjugated verb when there is only one verb in the sentence, as shown in the example above where the IOP nos is placed before the verb ( contó). Here are a few more examples of this:
