With the addition of GEHTMA-3 into DOTP, PVC/DOTP/GEHTMA-3 exhibits better mechanical properties, plasticization performance, migration resistance and thermal stability compared with the PVC/DOTP system. Above all, PVC/28DOTP/12GEHTMA-3 shows the highest tensile strength and elongation of 32.19 MPa and 345.20%, respectively.

DOTP (DEHT) was developed in 1949 and patented in 1953 by ExxonMobil but never commercialized for a good reason. Because of its poor compatibility with PVC, the company decided NOT to commercialize DOTP (DEHT) and shift its focus to other, more reliable solutions. This resulted in the development of Jayflex DIDP and DINP plasticizers.

Normally, DOP tends to be the cheapest PVC plasticizer, mainly due to the economies of scale achieved by this material, which means that its offer is greater than DOTP. In Plastisol, DOP is preferred because it does not generate so many “pin holes” defects because it doesn’t affect viscosity, allowing volatile substances to leave the paste.

DOTP oil is used in extrusion, rolling, injection molding, rotary casting, sloping casting, semi-molten casting and in the production of coatings. DOTP oil is also widely used as a phthalate-free softener in PVC products.
