Green plasticizers derived from epoxidized soybean oil
Four novel plasticizers based on ESO were prepared through integration of epoxidation catalyzed by α-Al 2 O 3 ·H 2 O and ring-opening reaction with H 2 SO 4 as a catalyst. Modified micro-flow system consisting of two micro-mixers and fixed bed flow reactors was applied in the epoxidation process, yielding ESO with an oxirane value of 6.1.

Green plasticizers derived from epoxidized soybean oil
The plasticizer is the most important type of auxiliary agent used in PVC, it can improve the plasticity of PVC, thereby enhancing the processing performance of PVC [16, 17]. Plasticizer...

Synthesis and properties of castor oil based plasticizers
The synthetic plasticizers were added to PVC as the main plasticizer, and the properties of these PVC blends were investigated and compared to the commercial plasticizers DOTP and ESO. Tensile properties showed that the tensile strength and elongation at break of the PVC sample plastified by EACO were 18.5 and 10.0% higher than that of DOTP
- Why is ESO used as a plasticizer?
- ESO is mainly utilized as the plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated rubber due to its inexpensive and facile availability of raw materials . As a renewable bio-based plasticizer, ESO is ideally suited for biodegradable polymer, such as PLA , , and ethyl cellulose .
- Is ESO a biodegradable plasticizer?
- As a renewable bio-based plasticizer, ESO is ideally suited for biodegradable polymer, such as PLA , , and ethyl cellulose . Orue et al. found that using ESO as a plasticizer for PLA resulted in the low plasticizer migration and a noticeable reduction in the modulus of the PLA matrix .
- Does ESO and glycerol plasticize corn starch?
- The XRD results indicated that all of the ESO, glycerol, and the mixture of ESO and glycerol have significant plasticizing effects on corn starch. The molecular interactions between plasticizers and starch were investigated by FTIR spectra.
- Does ESO increase the hydrophobicity of plasticized starch?
- Due to the hydrophobicity of ESO, the contact angle of the plasticized starch gradually increased with the increase of ESO content in the plasticizers. S E30 displayed the largest contact angle of 78.6°, which disclosed the enhanced hydrophobicity of the plasticized starch via introducing ESO.
- Does ESO deplete epoxy functional groups during plasticization process?
- The peaks of 724 and 822 cm −1 corresponding to the unique epoxy functional groups in ESO cannot be observed in plasticized starches with ESO. The result demonstrated that the chemical combination of ESO with starch leads to the depletion of the epoxy functional group during plasticization process.
- What makes a good non-toxic plasticizer?
- An ideal non-toxic plasticizer requires the ability to stabilize in the composite matrix, inhibit regeneration, and improve the properties of TPS. As the non-polar plasticizers, oil-based plasticizers that exhibit low migration-levels and toxicity can weaken the intermolecular interactions by isolating the molecular chains of starch.
