The bacterial catabolism of a technical formulation of alkylsulfonic acid phenyl esters employed as a general purpose plasticizer, Mesamoll, was elucidated. Two strains of the genus Rhodococcus were found able to utilize this substrate mixture as sole source of carbon and energy.
