Retarding Admixture - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
These admixtures, when added, would delay the setting time of the cement, i.e. the setting times lengthen. Retarders reduce the solubility of the hydrating components in cement and so are solubility reducers. Gypsum retards the dissolution of the aluminate phase (C 3 A). This retards the set of the cement.

Chemical Admixtures - Cement
There are five distinct classes of chemical admixtures: air-entraining, water-reducing, retarding, accelerating, and plasticizers (superplasticizers). All other varieties of admixtures fall into the specialty category whose functions include corrosion inhibition, shrinkage reduction, alkali-silica reactivity reduction, workability enhancement, bonding, damp proofing, and coloring.
Use of Water Reducers, Retarders, and Superplasticizer
There are four types of superplasticizers: sulfonated melamine, sulfonated naphthalene, modified lignosulfonates and a combination of high dosages of water reducing and accelerating admixtures. Commonly used are melamine based and naphthalene based superplasticizers.

3. Carbohydrates. Out of these materials, sodium, calcium and ammonium ligno sulphates are most popular. The amount of plasticizers used varies from 0.1% to 0.4% by weight of cement. At constant workability, the reduction in mixing water by the use of 0.1 to 0.4% of plasticizer is expected from 5% to 15%, which naturally increases the strength.
