The global demand for plasticizer oils and softeners is about 1.2 million tom per year, with aromatic and naphthenic oils accounting for ~96% of the total volume and type MES to a lesser extent. Specialist plasticisers include phosphates for fire retardancy, polymeric plasticisers (low migration) and some newer ‘non-phthalate’ plasticisers such as citrates, benzoate esters, alkyl sulphonic phenyl esters (Mesamoll), di-isononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (Hexamoll DINCH) and biobased plasticisers (e.g. Grindsted Soft-n-Safe).
