Selecting Tackifiers for Adhesives and Sealants
Functions of Tackifiers In adhesive and sealant formulations, tackifiers are used to generate tack and improve specific adhesion (peel strength). They are incorporated into base polymers which mainly lack tackiness and pressure-sensitive properties but provide cohesion.
Tackifiers
Tackifier Resins. Tackifiers are low-molecular weight compounds (oligomers) that are added to adhesive formulations to improve tack and peel adhesion. Their glass transition temperature (T g) is typically higher than that of the base polymer but their molecular weight is much lower. The tackifiers dissolve in the polymer matrix and break up
Sylvatac RE | IMCD US
This resin is a broadly compatible tackifier for non-food contact hot melt EVA, waterborne and solvent borne acrylics, SBR, CSBR butyl rubber and polychloroprene polymers. It may be blended with other resins to adjust such physical properties as SAFT, modulus, open time, level of tack, reposition ability, and legginess.
- What is tackifier & plasticizer?
- Due to the molecular property of the resin the tackifier quicky travels to the substrate on the compound providing the much needed building tack. Plasticizer: These resins contribute as plasticizers during the compound of the rubber compound.
- What is the best tackifier resin?
- With more than 35 years of experience, and 30+ grades in AP Series we offer resins to a wide spectrum of Industries. POLYTONE® AP 121 and AP 121 H are our best offering as tackifier resin, these are Octyl Phenol based Novolak Resins which provide superior green tack along with added benefits of low colour and plasticizer properties.
- What are Tackifiers & plasticizers in PSAs?
- Source: Extance, A., “Using Tackifiers and Plasticizers in PSAs”, SpecialChem, February 9, 2009. Plasticizers are organic liquids or solids that are incorporated by melt processing or diffusion into a compatible polymer to reduce interaction between molecules and improve molecular mobility.
- What is a tackifier used for?
- As the name suggests, they are used to increase the tack in the adhesive. They can increase the tack as they increase the glass transition temperature and lower the modulus of the polymer system. Tackifiers also help in maintaining correct balance between the adhesive and cohesive strength of the system.
- Does a plasticizer reduce tack?
- A plasticizer by itself can also reduce the modulus of the polymer network, but it is ineffective in increasing the tack, as it decreases the Tg of the system. At temperatures near the glass transition region, the adhesive is very effective in dissipating energy and providing good adhesive bond.
- Which phenolic tackifier is best?
- POLYTONE® AP 120 and AP 120 H are Butyl Phenol based Novolak Phenolic Tackifier. They are designed to provide a economical solution to formulators. Though their performance is lower compared to the Octyl Phenol based (POLYTONE® AP 121/121H) products, their cost effective ness makes them a competitive choice.
