Gelatin soft capsule formulation
Blend the gelatin, plasticizers* and water in the melter. Heat until the gelatin melts (end point 60°C). Vacuum for full de-aeration. Maturate for minimum 6 hours** at 60°C. Process the melt through your softgel equipment, dry to mass constancy (typically tumble dryer followed by tray drier at 20% ERH /25°C).
Film Formers & Plasticizers for Softgels | Sorbitol Applications
Sorbitol Special is an effective plasticizer for soft gel formulations which makes soft shells more robust. These grades reduce drying time, driving productivity and also enhance the gloss of capsules for a premium appearance. Pharmaceutical Tablet Film Coatings | PharmaCentral
A film coating is constituted from a variety of materials that include a polymer, a plasticizer, and other additives (surfactant, colorants/pigments and lubricants). Once combined and dissolved or dispersed in a solvent or aqueous medium, the different ingredients are sprayed onto the substrate and allowed to form a thin, continuous envelope.

In addition, food grade plasticizers such as glycerol, sorbitol, or polyethylene glycol are added to improve film flexibility. Fibers improve film strength, enhance matte finish, and increase nutritional benefits. Examples of fibers include inulin, psyllium, and carrot fiber. Fruit and vegetable purees are also good film formers.
- What is a film forming system?
- A film-forming system can be delivered via film-forming gels, solutions, or spray. FFSs can be in the form of a solution or dispersion in which the drug and film-forming excipients are dissolved/dispersed in a volatile solvent or solvents.
- Why are plasticizers important in film forming?
- Plasticizers are a very important component of the film-forming formulation. They are to be added in a minute amount in the formulation to provide the necessary flexibility to the film and to enhance the water permeation through the film.31Some plasticizers also act as drug diffusion enhancers along with providing plasticity to the film.
- Which polymers can be used to prepare film-forming formulations?
- Both natural and synthetic polymers can be useg to prepare the film-forming formulations. There is wide variety of options of the film-forming formulations like solvent, gel and emulsions too. Metered-dose sprays give more accurate dose with more ease for application. Patient compliance is expected to increase with the help of this concept.
- Which film forming agents does BASF offer?
- BASF offers film-forming agents including coalescents, open-time prolongers and plasticizers. Our portfolio focuses on highu0002performance and sustainable products with renewable content that are non-phthalate and have lowest-possible VOC emissions in systems ranging from paints to plasters and sealants.
- How is a film forming solution used?
- The film-forming solution is placed in the donor compartment after the compartment system is ready. The solution that diffuses through the cells is collected at regular intervals and then measured with an instrument. After collecting samples, the same volume of fluid is replaced. 9. - How many types of film formers are there?
- Essentially, there are 2 kinds of film formers. Water-soluble polymers have a hydrophilic nature, and while many of them are not suitable for enhancing substantivity in conventional skin-surface formulations. They are ideal for formulations in which the drug rapidly penetrates the stratum corneum to form a drug reservoir.
