  • What are plasticizers used for?
  • Plasticizers are additives that increase the plasticity or fluidity of a material. Coating formulations based on physically drying binders such as nitrocellulose, require external plasticizers for optimal film formation. They are used to control the film formation process of coatings based on physically drying film-forming materials.
  • Why are plasticizers used in film & coatings?
  • As a modified final product, plasticizers increase the temperature range of usage; increase flexibility, elongation, and toughness; and lower the glass transition temperature (Sears and Darby, 1982). For films or coatings, there are different definitions of plasticizers depending on the purpose of the polymer–plasticizer system.
  • Do plasticizers affect polymeric coating properties?
  • Various studies have been reported in the literature, investigating the effect of plasticizers on the properties of the final polymeric coating. Laboulfie et al. studied the effect of plasticizer on the mechanical resistance and thermal behavior of composite coating films.
  • Can plasticizers be used in coating formulations?
  • For natural products or hard polymers of poor processing, the option is the external use of plasticizers in the coating formulations. Plasticizers interact physically with the polymer binder molecule, without a chemical reaction and form a homogeneous system.
  • How do you choose a plasticizer for a polymer?
  • Proper selection of a plasticizer for a given polymer will allow optimization of the film mechanical properties with a minimum increase in film permeability. Common plasticizers for edible films and coatings, include monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polyols, lipids, and derivatives.
  • What are the different types of plasticizers for edible films & coatings?
  • Common plasticizers for edible films and coatings are monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polyols, lipids, and derivatives (Guilbert, 1986; Baldwin et al., 1997). Water is also an important plasticizer for edible films and coatings. Water content is dependent on the polymer and external plasticizer selected.
