Ionic liquids: New generation stable plasticizers for poly
Upon 20 wt% plasticization, some of the ILs lowered the glass transition temperature ( T g ) of PVC more than that done by several traditional plasticizers. They showed good thermodynamic compatibility as well. Several ILs showed better leaching and migration resistance than the traditional plasticizers.

In fact, ionic liquids are promising components according to their intrinsic features and their ionic characters [ 19, 24, 25, 26] which could promote interactions with polar groups. Thus, a new generation of polypropylene-based ionomer is proposed for the first time in this study.
- Are room temperature ionic liquids a plasticizer for poly (vinyl chloride)?
- Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs), based on ammonium, imidazolium and phosphonium cations, were studied as novel plasticizers for poly (vinyl chloride), PVC. All the ILs tested were able to produce flexible PVC.
- Are ionic liquids an alternative plasticizer for PVC?
- Ionic liquids as alternative plasticizers for PVC: flexibility and stability in thermal, leaching and ultraviolet Environments. In: Brazel CS, Rogers RD, editors. Ionic liquids in polymer systems: solvents, additives and novel applications. American Chemical Society symposium series, vol. 913. Washington, DC: Am Chem Soc; 2005. p. 103–18.
- How do ionic liquids affect biopolymers?
- Ionic liquids (ILs) have the ability to disrupt the hydrogen bonding network of biopolymers, increase the mobility of biopolymer chains, reduce friction, and produce materials with various morphologies and mechanical properties.
- What are ionic liquids & biopolymers?
- Ionic Liquids and Biopolymers Ionic Liquids (ILs) are loosely defined as salts that melt below 100 °C . Unlike conventional organic compounds, many of them exhibit negligible volatility, non-flammability, high thermal stability, and high conductivity.
- Do ionic liquids dissolve biopolymers?
- Ionic Liquids as Plasticizers From the above, it is evident that ILs can disrupt a hydrogen-bonding network of biopolymers, which makes them suitable to act as plasticizers. In fact, the ILs most reported as plasticizers are also reported to dissolve biopolymers (Figure 2).
- Do ionic liquids change modulus after plasticizer loss due to leaching?
- From this standpoint, many of the ionic liquids showed good behavior, in that the flexibility of the PVC samples changed the least. However, another way of looking at the data is that the plasticizers with high plasticizing efficiency will cause the greatest changes in modulus after plasticizer loss due to leaching.
