The Latest Supply Chain Disruption: Plastics
Texas is home to the world’s largest petrochemical complex, which turns oil and gas and other byproducts into plastics. Almost 100 critical chemicals and derivatives used widely across many...
Plasticizers: Types, Uses, Classification, Selection & Regulation
Due to its low cost and generally good performance, DEHP is widely employed as a plasticizer in manufacturing articles made of PVC. Melting point: 50°C Boiling point: 250 - 257°C at 0.5 kPa Structure of DEHP DEHP offers good gelling, satisfactory electrical properties and helps to produce highly elastic compounds with reasonable cold strength.
Guide to Manufacturing Processes for Plastics | Formlabs
Some commonly machined plastics are: Acrylic (PMMA) Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) Polyamide nylon (PA) Polylactic acid (PLA) Polycarbonate (PC) Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) Polyethylene (PE) Polypropylene (PP) Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Polycarbonate (PC) Polystyrene (PS) Polyoxymethylene (POM) Webinar
Plastic Resin Prices 2025 | Resin Shortage & Cost of Plastic
Polypropylene (PP) has also climbed in price: from 5.69 cents/lb in 2025 to 18.44 cents/lb in February 2025, and 28.34 cents/lb in March 2025. It is thought that Plastic prices have or will peak soon, and slowly plateau as producers and distributors work tirelessly to return operations to their normal, efficient, and stable states.
- What are natural based plasticizers?
- Nowadays, there is increasing interest in the use of natural-based plasticizers that are characterized by low toxicity and low migration. This group includes epoxidized triglyceride vegetable oils from soybean oil, linseed oil, castor-oil, sunflower oil, and fatty acid esters (FAEs) .
- What are plasticizers & how do they work?
- Plasticizers are non-volatile organic substances (mainly liquids) added into a plastic or elastomer. They are also usually cheaper than other additives. They improve the following properties of the polymers: Plasticizers increase the flow and thermoplasticity of a polymer.
- Are polymeric plasticizers a good choice?
- They can be designed so that they are highly compatible with the host polymer, and leaching and volatility issues have been significantly improved over traditional plasticizers. However, polymeric plasticizers are usually expensive and have lower plasticizing efficiency than most traditional plasticizers.
- Why are plasticizers used in film coating?
- Plasticizers are low molecular weight substances added to a polymer solution to promote its plasticity and flexibility. Therefore, the plasticizers make the polymer solution more suitable for the application of film coating. There should be chemical similarities between the polymers and its plasticizers.
- Do Plasticizers make a polymer softer?
- They usually are low in molecular weight and exist in liquid (rubbery) form (Wypych, 2004). Thus, when plasticizers are added to a polymer (poly vinyl chloride, PVC) it makes the polymer softer and can be used for other purposes.
- What is a primary plasticizer?
- A primary plasticizer enhances elongation, softness and flexibility of polymer. They are highly compatible with polymers and can be added in large quantities. For example: up to 50% of vinyl gloves are made up of plasticizers, which make the PVC flexible and soft enough to wear.
