There’s no exact way of striking equivalence between PCM and DSD but it’s around the same as 24-bit/88.2kHz PCM. In terms of dynamic range, DSD is claimed to be around 120dB in the audible frequency range. In comparison, CD measures around 96dB, and 24-bit/192kHz recordings have a theoretical maximum of around 144dB.

As far as I am concerned the only "disadvantage" for DoP is that it requires high rate PCM capability for those who want to be able to playback high rate DSD files: DSD 64 requires a 176.4 PCM package, DSD 128 requires a 352.8 PCM package, and DSD 256 requires a 705.6 PCM package.

When it gets to the DAC chip, it gets unpackaged and played as a proper DSD stream. Some DSD DACs can't really handle DSD, or rather the DAC chip can but the (USB) controller chip can't. So DoP seems the only way to make those devices work. DoP requires some quite ridiculous PCM sampling rates if you want the higher DSD rates.
