Plasticizers, infant nutrition and reproductive health
Since the 1930s, plasticizers have been used to impart flexibility to an otherwise rigid polyvinylchloride (PVC). Di- (2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) is the most widely used plasticizer in PVC formulations. However, DEHP leaks out from PVC items with time and use and consequently it is an ubiquitous environmental contaminant.

Many plasticizers used in PVC are derived from petroleum and have phthalates in their structure. Some studies show that these compounds, containing a phthalate fraction, are very toxic and can cause disturbances in the human reproductive system [5 5 Latini, G., De Felice, C., & Verrotti, A.
