Selecting Tackifiers for Adhesives and Sealants
In adhesive and sealant formulations, tackifiers are used to generate tack and improve specific adhesion (peel strength). They are incorporated into base polymers which mainly lack tackiness and pressure-sensitive properties but provide cohesion.
Additives for Pressure Sensitive Adhesives
Additives in pressure sensitive adhesive formulations include tackifiers, plasticizers, antioxidants, flame retardants, pigments, and fillers. These compounds are added to achieve very specific end-use or processing properties. Tackifiers Generally, tackifiers or blends of tackifiers are added to the base polymer in pressure sensitive formulations.

- What are Tackifiers used for?
- In adhesive and sealant formulations, tackifiers are used to generate tack and improve specific adhesion (peel strength). They are incorporated into base polymers which mainly lack tackiness and pressure-sensitive properties but provide cohesion.
- Is a tackifier compatible with an adhesive polymer?
- Compatibility between a tackifier and an adhesive polymer is a crucial factor in enhancing viscoelastic properties. In contrast, a certain amount of incompatibility can also provide desired properties. The Hildebrand solubility parameter gives an estimate of the degree of interaction between tackifier and polymer.
- Does tackifier increase Tg?
- Therefore, the tackifier addition raises the Tg of the final adhesive. Tackifiers operate opposite to plasticizers which lower the Tg of the adhesive formulation. The tackifying agent must be compatible with the base polymer. With hot-melt adhesives, consideration must also be given to the heat stability of the tackifier in the melt.
- What are Tackifiers & plasticizers in PSAs?
- Source: Extance, A., “Using Tackifiers and Plasticizers in PSAs”, SpecialChem, February 9, 2009. Plasticizers are organic liquids or solids that are incorporated by melt processing or diffusion into a compatible polymer to reduce interaction between molecules and improve molecular mobility.
- Which polyterpene Tackifiers are best for pressure-sensitive adhesives?
- SYLVARESTM Polyterpene TackifiersPolyterpene grades with a high softening point have shown to combine high heat resistance and excellent tack and pee for pressure-sensitive adhesives. These resins offer the highest amount of biorenewable content of Kraton’s product lines and are compatible with polyolefins an
