OVERVIEW OF DIALKYL - U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
CPSIA plus dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP). The information in this report will be provided to the CHAP on Phthalates. The toxicity data for five phthalate substitutes has been reviewed separately (Versar and SRC 2010), and will also be provided to the CHAP.

Determination of Extractable and Leachable Phthalates
These phthalates are esters of phthalic acid such as dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) used as plasticizers in pharmaceutical plastic packaging which were quantitated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

- What is dimethyl phthalate (DMP) concentration?
- Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) concentration (presented as cumulative amount ug/cm²) in receptor phase over time (h) during permeation experiments with: a—Strat-M® membrane (SMM), b—in vitro epidermal model (Reconstructed Human Epidermis, RHE) and c – ex vivo human skin (HS).
- Is DMP a phthalate?
- Levels of DMP, and otherphthalates including diethyl phthalate, DBP, and DEHP, in semen of a group of proven fertile men (i.e., who had offspring within 1 year of the study) were lower than levels in a group of infertile men (who had regular unprotected intercourse within 1 year without their partners achieving pregnancy) (Pant et al., 2008).
- How much monomethyl phthalate (DMP) is toxicity?
- After an orally administered dose of 0.1mL of DMP, about 77% of monomethyl phthalate and 8% of DMP have been detected in urine collected for 24 hours from male rats. Acute oral toxicity results in an LD50 of 8,2, 5,2, 2,9, 10,1 and 8,6 mg/kg for rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chicks, and mice respectively.
- Is dimethyl phthalate toxic to humans?
- Acute (short-term) exposure to dimethyl phthalate, via inhalation in humans and animals, results in irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. No information is available on the chronic (long-term), reproductive, developmental, or carcinogenic effects of dimethyl phthalate in humans.
- Is dimethyl phthalate carcinogenic?
- No information is available on the carcinogenic effects of dimethyl phthalate in humans or animals. EPA has classified dimethyl phthalate as a Group D, not classifiable as to human carcinogenicity. (5) Dimethyl phthalate is a colorless oily liquid with a slightly sweet odor.
- Where is dimethyl phthalate found?
- Dimethyl phthalate was detected in 62% of 50 telecommunication offices, 0 of 7 data centers, and 0 of 4 offices (4). Monitoring data indicate that the general population may be exposed to dimethyl phthalate via inhalation of ambient air, ingestion of food and drinking water, and dermal contact with products containing dimethyl phthalate (SRC).
