How to clean sticky leather or vinyl? - Rub 'n Restore
Sticky vinyl indicates a plasticizer issue. Over time the oily plasticizers used in the production of PVC migrate to the surface. The issue may or may not be apparent until a new finish is applied which chemically reacts with the plasticizer. The solution is to clean the surface with denatured alcohol or paint thinner, and then apply a blocker
Damaged Or Blemished Wood Finishes Can Be Repaired Successfully
The result of plasticizer damage is a discoloration and a softening of the finish. The two photos at the top show two results of plasticizer damage. In both of these cases, even though the damage was very visible and undesirable, it was repairable. It often is not. Especially with trivet feet, the damage will go directly down to the wood.
Green Polymer Additives | Emery Oleochemicals
Improved surface finish Prevention of surface defects caused by the separation process Reduced machine wear and cleaning frequency Minimized scrap Pentaerythritol esters are suitable as release agents mainly in polycarbonate and ABS polymers, but also in PET, PA and other plastics.
Plasticisers - Information Center
Plasticisers are major functional substances that transform the physical properties of PVC and other polymers creating a whole new world of flexible and durable applications. Because plasticisers (US: plasticizers) are so widely used, they have undergone extensive testing for possible health and environmental effects and are amongst the most
The Craftsman: Table Leaf with Plasticizer Damage - Blogger
Usually the only way to fix plasticizer damage is to completely strip and refinish the table. But before we took that step we tried a less extensive procedure, just in case. In this situation it was enough. We began by removing the top layers of the table's finish where the damage was.
- What are the effects of plasticizer damage?
- A chemical heat is created which softens the finish. The seriousness of the damage is a function of the quality and condition of the finish, the specific interaction of the plastics, and the duration of contact. The result of plasticizer damage is a discoloration and a softening of the finish.
- Can plasticizer damage Trivet feet?

- What to do with a damaged finish?
- Here is another example of a before and after of a damaged finish, this time on a table top. Again, powdered pigments of the appropriate colors liquified in shellac applied with artist brushes, sealed with an aerosol lacquer sealer. A little experience is thrown in too!
- Can a damaged finish be saved?
- There is no saving the damaged finish, it must be removed. What repair is needed depends upon the extent of damage. If it is not too deep some light abrasion to the surface will remove the damaged finish and leave undamaged finish. I had same problem. I used the waffle type shelf liner on my new table to keep table cloth in place.
- What is plasticizer migration?
- What you are probably seeing is a phenomenon called "plasticizer migration." The way I explain it is that the chemicals in the plastic to keep it soft and flexible migrate into the finish and do the same there. There is no saving the damaged finish, it must be removed. What repair is needed depends upon the extent of damage.
- Can plasticizer migration cause flooring failures?
- Photo: Gary Sheidker. Plasticizer migration is a common cause of flooring failures. Plasticizers can come from the flooring, sound control underlayment, maintenance products and even some concrete substrates. These plasticizers can attack the polymers in some adhesives, causing them to degrade over time.
